Last Friday the City’s Twitter-powered taco slingers, La Carnita, were back at it with another heavily anticipated ‘pop-up’.
The event was held at The Bait Shop and on hand to help out was the crew with from El Gastrónomo Vagabundo, the gourmet food truck also known for their unique and tasty tacos.

We got there just before 7:00 p.m. and found the El Gastro truck parked outside in the alley. Both teams were busy inside the truck but they hadn’t started serving yet so we headed inside to check out the live skateboarding happening in The Bait Shop.

We were also relieved to find a bar upstairs serving hipster-favourite Pabst Blue Ribbon tall cans for $5.
Pretty soon we noticed people heading downstairs so we figured it must be taco time.
When we got back into the alley a line had formed by the truck and we could see the La Carnita and El Gastro teams assembling and dispatching tacos to those at the front.

Things seemed well organized and when we got to the front of the line we paid our $10 and received a limited edition print from artist Pascal Paquette.
On the menu was a tempura cod taco from El Gastro and a cochinita pibil taco from La Carnita.

As expected both were excellent and I was pleased to find that each had a decent amount of heat to them. However if I had to pick a favorite I would go with the cod simply because the crispy tempura batter provided such an amazing texture contrast.

If you haven’t been to a La Carnita pop-up yet make sure you follow them on Twitter to find out when the next one is announced. You can also sign up for email updates below and we will notify you as well.
