Gourmet Food Truck El Gastrónomo Vagabundo Rolls Onto Ryerson Campus This Week

By on January 10, 2012

St. Catherines food truck El Gastrónomo Vagabundo descended on Ryerson University’s Student Centre today for what was the first of three lunch appearances this week.

Known for their innovative take on the taco, today’s menu included two varieties. The first was their Bajan Invasion, a combination of lightly fried tempura tilapia, Bajan mango hot sauce, sour cream, red cabbage and apple slaw with a lime wedge.

It’s got a nice crunch from the tempura and just the right amount of heat and sweet from the hot sauce and the slaw.

The other taco on offer was their Rummy Tummy Taco. Chili caramel pork belly, rum-infused pineapple and chili tamarind sauce combined for an interesting and seriously delicious snack. This one was new for me as I’d had the Bajan before (with cod mind you), and despite the caramel it wasn’t too sweet. Plus it has pork belly in it so you know it’s going to be good.

The third item on offer, Tom Yum Soup, is something they’ve had on their menu for their last few Toronto appearances and is nice little warm up on a cold day. It brings an asian flavour with Thai broth, rice noodles, cherry tomatoes and fried shallots.

If you missed El Gastrónomo Vagabundo today you can catch them in the same spot outside the Student Centre (55 Gould St.) tomorrow and Thursday.
