Toronto’s first ever Argentinian food truck, Che, burst onto the food truck scene with a surprise service back in June. Since then the truck has been operating around the city serving homemade Argentinian delights like empanadas and choripan.
Get to know owner Sebastian Gallucci and discover why he decided to open a food truck and what item on his menu he says is a must-try.
How did you get into the food truck scene?
My dream was to always open a restaurant or food truck. One lovely day in May my girlfriend Lezah and I drove 3 hours to check out this truck and boom that was the end of that. I left my job at RBC after 5 years to follow my dream. I’ve never been so happy.
Where did you learn how to make this particular cuisine?
I grew up in a crazy Argentinian-Italian house, with three crazy soccer boys. God bless my parents. The unspoken rule of my house was whoever got home first had to cook dinner. Yes, I was cooking dinner at 12 years old. I couldn’t even see the stove – I had to stand on a chair to make fresh sugo.
Do you have a favourite item on your menu?
I love everything we make but our homemade choripan is my favourite. My amazing employee Fendi would agree.
What’s one thing the city should do to make life easier for food truck owners?
30 meter rule is a little silly – competition is healthy. Let’s all support each other.
What’s your favourite food truck?
This is very tough but I have to give a shout out to the boys from ME.N.U Food Truck. Love their energy and their passion.
