Toronto Underground Market – The Second Installment

Last Saturday we had the pleasure of attending part two of the Toronto Underground Market, an event that brings together an array of Toronto’s finest home cooks and aspiring professionals to showcase a celebration of amazing street food.

We missed the first installment and wanted to make sure we arrived in plenty of time to jockey for ideal position in front of some of the 25 vendors that were on hand at the Evergreen Brickworks, an awesome open air concept venue and a perfect fit for TUM.

Assuming a 6:00 PM arrival was plenty of time we were suprised to see what seemed like all 1,500 ticket holders already crammed into the venue stuffing their faces and sipping on local wine and craft beer.

Not to be discouraged by the crowds of TUMers, we jumped into an already epic forming line for La Carnita.

Based on the success of their most recent taco pop up one night earlier, we had to see what they had in store for their stand at TUM which was strategically placed at the back of the Brickworks Hall so as to not impose itself on the other vendors.

We were told the lineup would take approximately 30 minutes to run its course so while two of us held position, the other went on a stroll to find a round of one of the local beers.

Back within 5 minutes, we all had our first taste of the Stonehammer Pilsner from F&M Brewery. Not much to say here other than Pilsner – its a delicious beer folks. Having wet our pallets with our first pint we inched closer to the front of the line and were happy to see the menu and the art piece from Katherine Patton that would accompany our delicious tacos.

Starving at this point, we could barely snap this photo before diving in. Up first the Voltron Fish Taco, a La Carnita staple and fan favourite. Tasty voltron sauce coupled with hints of cinnamon and heat paired perfectly with the crispiness of the breaded fish. Next up the Cochinato Pibil (pork) taco which had a juicy smokeyness to it that made for another hit. Two delicious tacos, now on to the next vendor.

We positioned ourselves in the line for Comida del Pueblo which had one of the biggest lines all night.

While waiting in line we decided it was time for another round of beers. This time we all went for the IPA from Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery. Interesting flavours to this one and a tasty prelude to the menu selections of Comida del Pueblo ahead.

Despite our disappointment when we heard that the Grilled Cheese was sold out, we were eager to bite into the Ontario Water Buffalo Empanada and the Banana Beignets.

The Empanada was cooked perfectly and the water buffalo was sweet and had tonnes of flavour. As for the beignets, it’s hard to explain how incredible they were so I will leave it at that.

We finished the night off with a beef po boy from the guys at Westside Beef Co (which we scarfed down before remembering to take a picture) and one last beer, a delicious Hawaiian style brew from Spearhead Brewery.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to as many vendors as we would have liked because we chose to wait in some of the longer lines and had to leave early to go to another event, but we look forward to sampling some different vendors at the next TUM.

And although this event did not have any physical Food Trucks, it still had lots of amazing street food which is really what this site is all about.

We all agreed that this was an amazing event put on by TUM founder Hassel Aviles and the rest of the TUM volunteers and judging by the atmosphere on Saturday night so did everyone else.

We can’t wait for the next TUM, an event that celebrates the budding streat food scene in our wonderful city of Toronto.

Cheers!
