Here we go again. As Toronto’s food trucks gear up for the start of this year’s food truck season, they will be keeping a close eye on city council as the debate on Toronto’s food truck street vending rules will be reviewed and reassessed on Thursday March 5th.
Last April, a new set of street vending rules was passed to allow trucks who invested in a $5,066 permit, to operate at pay by display locations around the city, but must stay a minimum of 50 linear metres from a restaurant and can park for a maximum of 3 hours per service. Although the city made 125 permits available for purchase, Municipal Licensing & Standards (MLS) confirmed that a mere 17 permits were sold over the past year. Clearly, the new rules just aren’t working.
According to the overview of Thursday’s Street Vending Review, the council will be reviewinging the research and findings of Toronto’s street food scene over the past couple years which include the feedback on the new rules that kicked-in in May 2014 as well as the two-month Food Truck Pilot Program in 2013 at various Toronto park locations which are described as spots that saw ‘high pedestrian traffic and visibility” which would allow the city to assess the feasibility of an expanded street food scene.
We’re hoping that with the new changes made to council, we may see some positive traction coming out of tomorrow’s City Hall meeting. Until then, we’ll just have to cross our fingers and wait.
