Toronto’s new street food vending laws officially kick-in

By on May 15, 2014

09212013-gorillacheese-01Early last month, the topic of street food vending was hotly debated at City Hall, and the city council ultimately voted to loosen the bylaws around food truck vending throughout the streets of Toronto. Prior to the change, trucks were only allowed to serve from private property spaces like Sony Centre and 10 Bay St as well as at events.

Starting May 15, the new vending laws kick in and will allow trucks to operate at pay by display parking spots across the city, granted they invest in the new street food vending permit that will cost $5,066.69 per year and follow some strict service rules. As only 125 of these permits will be available for purchase from the city, one would think it would surely be a hot commodity among food trucks right? That may not be the case.

Recently, Zagat Toronto spoke with a number of local food truck owners about whether or not they will invest in the expensive and highly restrictive Toronto license. Consensus seems to show to that the city shouldn’t be expecting food truck owners to come and fight to claim one of the new permits as many feel it’s simply not good business invest in one this year. You can see further reactions from several trucks including Gorilla Cheese, Frankie Fettuccine and Gourmet Gringos on the Zagat Toronto article.

It will surely be an interesting year ahead for food trucks with the new bylaws, but knowing the resilient truck owners, they’ll find a way to make Toronto services happen with or without a new permit.
